What is zero party data?
Zero party data is what customers tell you on purpose: preferences, intentions, needs, shared knowingly through quizzes, preference centres, surveys and conversations. Where first party data is observed behaviour, zero party data is declared truth, no inference required.
Why it matters
It is the most privacy proof data there is: freely given, explicitly consented, impossible to misread as surveillance. It also answers questions behaviour cannot: what someone is shopping for, for whom, by when, within what budget. As third party signals fade, data the customer hands you voluntarily becomes a competitive asset nobody can copy.
How to collect it
- Trade value for truth: a product finder, a personalised recommendation, better content, people share when sharing improves their experience.
- Ask at natural moments: onboarding, post purchase, inside the community, not as an interrogation at first contact.
- Keep the promise: data shared for personalisation must visibly personalise, or the trust that produced it dies.
The honest view
Zero party data ages: intentions expire, preferences drift. Collect it continuously, use it quickly, and let it steer segmentation, creative and offers while it is still true. Declared data that just sits in the CRM is a promise the brand broke to itself.
