What is Ad Rank?
Ad Rank is the value calculated at every search auction to order the ads. Google combines the bid, ad quality (expected click through rate, ad relevance, landing page experience), the context of the search, the expected impact of assets like sitelinks, and minimum thresholds. Microsoft Ads runs a close equivalent for Bing.
Why it matters
The auction is not a bidding war. A more relevant ad with a better landing page can win a higher position for a lower cost per click than a clumsy ad with a bigger bid. Ad Rank is where quality earns a discount, and it is why two advertisers on the same keyword can pay very different prices for the same spot.
What moves it
- Relevance in a straight line: query, ad copy and landing page saying the same thing.
- Assets that add value: sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, images, all counted in the score.
- Landing page experience: speed, mobile fit, and a page that delivers what the ad promised.
- Bid strategy: Smart Bidding adjusts the bid per auction, but it cannot fix a weak ad.
The honest view
You never see your Ad Rank. You see its symptoms: impression share lost to rank, cost per click creeping up, position slipping on the terms that matter. Read those, and fix the relevance before raising the budget. Paying more for a worse ad is the most expensive way to stay on page one.
