What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are five tags appended to a link: utm_source (the platform), utm_medium (the channel type), utm_campaign (the campaign), utm_content (the creative or placement) and utm_term (the keyword or audience). GA4 reads them the moment the visitor lands and files the session under the right channel.
Why it matters
Without UTMs, GA4 files paid social under referral, email under direct, and a creator link under nothing at all. Every channel report built on that is fiction with decimals. UTMs are the only way analytics knows what media knows, and the only way a creative variation can be followed all the way to revenue.
The rules that make them work
- One convention, written down: lowercase, no spaces, the same values everywhere, owned by one person.
- Medium is the channel type, source is the platform: paid_social and meta, not the other way round.
- Content carries the creative: the hook, the format, the creator, so testing shows up in analytics.
- Never on internal links: a UTM on a menu link erases the real source of the session.
The honest view
UTMs are the cheapest measurement fix that exists and the one most often broken. A convention nobody follows is worse than none, because it produces confident, wrong reports. Auto tagging on Google and the click IDs on Meta help, but they do not replace the discipline of naming things the same way twice.
