What is targeting?
Targeting is deciding who sees your advertising: which audiences, contexts, moments and places. Every platform offers its own levers, demographics, interests, behaviour, intent, location, your own customer data.
How it has changed
The craft used to be manual precision: stacking interest filters into hand built audiences. Automated platforms turned that upside down: algorithms now find the audience from conversion signals and creative response, and broad targeting with strong creative routinely beats narrow slices. On modern paid social, creative is the targeting, the content decides who resonates, and the machine follows.
What still deserves the word
- First party audiences: customers, high value segments and lookalikes built from them, evidence beats inference.
- Exclusions: keeping spend away from existing buyers, irrelevant regions and wrong contexts is quiet, permanent efficiency.
- Language and geography: non negotiable in a market like Belgium.
- Context: placements and moments that fit the message, a targeting route that needs no personal data at all.
The honest view
Targeting narrows waste; it does not create desire. The strongest setup is honest inputs, clean signals, sensible guardrails, and messages worth targeting people with. Precision aimed at a weak message is just accuracy in missing the point.
