What is share of voice?
Share of voice is your slice of the category's total visibility: advertising presence, search results, social conversation, media coverage, measured against everyone competing for the same audience.
Why it matters
Share of voice predicts share of market. The long observed rule: brands whose voice share exceeds their market share tend to grow, and brands that go quiet shrink with a delay that flatters the decision to cut. It reframes budget questions competitively: not what does it cost, but how loud are we versus the people trying to take our customers.
Where to measure it
- Paid: impression share in search, estimated ad presence on social platforms.
- Organic: visibility across the search terms the category fights for.
- Conversation: mentions and sentiment across social and press.
- AI answers: the newest front, how often generative engines cite you versus the competition when buyers ask.
How to use it
Track it by segment and region, not just in total: a strong national average can hide the city or category where a challenger is outshouting you. And read it with quality in mind, being everywhere with a forgettable message is expensive silence.
