What is retail media?
Retail media is advertising inside retailer environments and marketplaces: sponsored products, search placements and display, served where people are already shopping.
Why it grew so fast
Retailers own what every advertiser wants: purchase data and the last metres before the transaction. As cookies faded, that first party shopping data became gold, and every major retailer built an ad business on top of it. The money followed, and retail media is now a structural line in most consumer media plans.
The strengths
- Proximity to purchase: no channel sits closer to the transaction.
- Closed loop measurement: ad exposure linked directly to sales inside the same platform.
- Real shopping intent: targeting built on what people actually buy, not what they claim to like.
The trap
Judging it in isolation. Retail media often takes credit for demand that brand and social work created upstream: the shopper searching for your product on a marketplace was usually convinced somewhere else first. Its closed loop numbers look flattering precisely because they harvest existing intent.
How to use it well
Plan it inside the full funnel, not beside it. Coordinate it with the campaigns that create the demand, and let Media Mix Modelling arbitrate its real contribution against the channels that filled the basket in the first place.
