What is Performance Max?
Performance Max is Google's automated campaign type: one campaign buying across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps, steered by your conversion goals and assets.
How it works
You provide the inputs: conversion goals and values, creative assets, product feeds, audience signals. Google's automation decides where, when and to whom the ads show, shifting budget between surfaces in real time towards whatever converts. You steer the machine through its inputs, not its placements.
The honest view
Powerful, and opaque. PMax performs when the inputs are right: clean conversion tracking, quality feeds and creative, honest exclusions, and enough signal to learn from. Feed it weak data and it will spend confidently in the wrong places, and its reporting will not tell you where. It also loves claiming branded search conversions that were coming anyway, so incrementality checks matter.
How to run it well
- Protect the brand traffic: exclude branded queries where you want visibility on true prospecting performance.
- Feed it values: margin or lifetime value based conversion values, so it optimises towards profit, not volume.
- Give it real creative: every format, tested and refreshed, because asset quality caps performance.
- Audit the results: read PMax through incrementality and total account performance, not its own scorecard. Automation replaces the busywork, not the judgement.
