What is a hook?
The hook is the opening of a piece of content: the first line, the first frame, the first three seconds. On social platforms it decides everything, because the scroll does not wait.
Why three seconds rule everything
Feeds are auctions for attention, and the audience votes with a flick of the thumb. Platforms read those first seconds as the strongest quality signal they have: content that holds people early gets shown to more people, content that loses them gets buried. The hook is not just a creative choice, it is a distribution decision.
What makes a hook work
- Immediate stakes: a question, a tension or a promise the viewer wants resolved.
- Visual disruption: movement, faces, contrast, something that breaks the rhythm of the feed.
- Native codes: it looks like the platform, not like an ad that wandered in.
- No warm up: logos, intros and brand jingles first are where hooks go to die.
How to work on hooks
Hooks deserve their own testing: multiple openings on the same story, measured, and the winners scaled. Watch the three second view rate and the hold rate, not just clicks. And when a video underperforms, look at the hook before blaming the media: in most accounts, the first fix is the first frame.
