What is Google Merchant Center?
Google Merchant Center is the account where a retailer uploads and manages its product feed. Google reads it to build Shopping ads, Performance Max asset groups, free product listings and the shopping tab. It also holds shipping, tax and return settings, and runs the checks that decide whether each product is allowed to show.
Why it matters
No product reaches a Google surface without passing through Merchant Center. A disapproved product is invisible, whatever the budget. A feed missing GTINs, sale prices or accurate stock loses auctions to competitors whose data is cleaner. It is the gatekeeper between the catalogue and every Google shopping placement, paid or free.
What a healthy account looks like
- Zero avoidable disapprovals: policy issues, price mismatches and missing attributes reviewed weekly, not when a campaign dies.
- Automatic price and availability updates: structured data or scheduled fetches so the ad never promises what the page cannot deliver.
- Supplemental feeds: custom labels, better titles and promotions layered on top without touching the ERP export.
- Linked accounts: Google Ads, GA4 and the local inventory feed connected, so bidding and reporting see the same data.
The honest view
Merchant Center is where most Shopping problems start and where almost nobody looks. Teams optimise bids on products that are silently limited, and blame the algorithm. Before touching a campaign, open the diagnostics tab. It is the least glamorous ten minutes in paid search, and often the most profitable.
