What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand visible in AI generated answers: Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and whatever comes next. Where SEO earns a ranking, GEO earns a citation.
How AI answers choose sources
AI systems assemble answers from content they can read, parse and trust. They favour pages with clear structure, direct answers, verifiable facts and consistent brand signals across the web. They also lean on what the wider internet says about you: mentions, reviews, authority. Visibility in AI answers is earned partly on your site and partly everywhere else.
What the work looks like
- Answer shaped content: pages that state the answer plainly before elaborating, structured so a machine can lift it cleanly.
- Technical access: letting AI crawlers read the site, with structured data and clean markup.
- Brand corroboration: consistent facts about the brand across directories, press and platforms, so models trust what they repeat.
Why it matters
A growing share of questions never reach a results page: the answer arrives directly, sources included. Brands that structure their content for machines to read, quote and trust will be in that answer; the rest will be invisible at the exact moment a customer asks. The goal has not changed, the surface has: be the answer, wherever the question is asked.
