What is frequency?
Frequency is how often the same person sees your ad in a given period. Reach counts how many people; frequency counts how many times each.
Why it matters
Messages need repetition to stick: one exposure rarely builds memory, and awareness campaigns are built on controlled repetition. But repetition has a cliff: past a certain point each extra exposure adds annoyance instead of memory, costs rise, and creative fatigue sets in. Frequency is the dial between invisible and irritating.
How to manage it
- Cap by objective: awareness tolerates more repetition than conversion campaigns chasing warm audiences.
- Watch it across channels: platforms cap their own frequency, nobody caps the total. The same person can meet your ad on three platforms a day, and only cross channel planning sees it.
- Refresh creative before the cliff: rising frequency plus falling engagement is the fatigue alarm, and the fix is new creative, not just lower caps.
- Use variation: the third exposure lands better when it is a different angle of the same story, not the same file again.
The honest view
Most accounts discover frequency only when performance drops. Watch it as a leading indicator instead: it is one of the few metrics that predicts trouble before the results show it.
