What are Enhanced Conversions?
Enhanced Conversions supplement your Google Ads conversion tags with hashed first party data, email, phone, address, captured at the moment of conversion. Two versions exist. Enhanced Conversions for web improve attribution of online conversions. Enhanced Conversions for leads match offline sales back to the ad click through the lead's email, even when no click ID was stored.
Why it exists
Consent mode, browser tracking prevention and cross device journeys mean the tag sees fewer conversions than actually happen. Enhanced Conversions recover a share of them, feed Smart Bidding fuller data, and unlock conversion modelling for the rest. It is Google's counterpart to Meta's Advanced Matching: same logic, same trade offs.
How to set them up
- Through Google Tag Manager: user provided data variables mapped to the form fields, hashed before sending.
- Consent gated: the data leaves only when the visitor's choice allows it.
- For leads, via the CRM: an export of converted leads with email and conversion date, uploaded or connected.
- Verified in diagnostics: the conversion action's diagnostics tab shows whether the data is arriving and matching.
The honest view
Enhanced conversions in Google Ads aren't just back-end maintenance, they're a direct engine for unlocking extra sales from the exact same ad budget. Feeding Google's algorithms clean, match-grade first-party data stops Smart Bidding from flying blind and trains it to hunt down actual high-intent buyers. Dismissing first-party data capture as mere measurement setup ignores the fact that better algorithm inputs are what ultimately fund scale.
