What is engagement rate?
Engagement rate is the share of people who interact with content, likes, comments, shares, saves, clicks, relative to how many saw it or follow the account. It measures whether content provokes a response or just passes by.
Why it matters
Engagement is the feed's currency. Platforms distribute content that people interact with, so engagement buys organic reach and lowers paid costs: an ad that earns reactions gets cheaper delivery than one the audience ignores. It is also a fast proxy for resonance: which topics, formats and creators actually move your audience.
Reading it honestly
- Not all engagement is equal: saves and shares signal value, comments signal conversation, likes signal very little. Weigh them accordingly.
- Compare within context: rates differ wildly by platform, format and audience size. A small niche account will out engage a giant one every day.
- Watch the direction: the trend across your own content teaches more than any industry average.
The trap
Engagement is a means, not an end. Content can be endlessly engaging and commercially useless: rage bait, memes with no brand link, giveaways that attract prize hunters. Engagement earns attention; strategy decides whether that attention ever becomes acquisition.
