What is the customer journey?
The customer journey is the path someone travels from first contact to purchase and beyond: the video that introduced the brand, the review that reassured, the search that closed, the email that brought them back. It is rarely linear and never identical, but patterns exist, and they are worth mapping.
Why it matters
Every touchpoint is a chance to advance or lose someone. Brands that see the journey as a whole put the right message at the right stage; brands that see only channels bombard everyone with the same bottom funnel push and wonder why it stops working. The journey view also exposes the leaks: the stage where interest dies, the handover where nobody follows up.
How to work with it
- Map from data, not assumption: analytics, search queries and community conversations show the real paths, which rarely match the internal slide.
- Match message to stage: strangers need a reason to care, considerers need proof, buyers need ease.
- Measure across the journey: a full funnel view, because judging every touchpoint on last click punishes the ones that start journeys.
- Fix the leaks first: improving a broken handover usually beats adding budget upstream of it.
