What is CTR?
Click through rate is the share of impressions that turn into clicks. A hundred people see the ad, three click: 3 percent CTR. It is the most immediate signal of whether a message earns a response.
What CTR is good for
- Creative diagnostics: comparing hooks, angles and formats against each other, fast.
- Relevance signals: in search, CTR feeds quality systems that lower your click price.
- Fatigue detection: a sliding CTR on stable delivery is creative wearing out.
What CTR is not
A goal. A click is a moment of curiosity, not a business result: high CTR ads can attract clickers who never buy, and clickbait wins the CTR contest while losing the customer. Some of the most valuable campaigns, video views that build memory, awareness that shows up in branded search weeks later, barely generate clicks at all.
How to use it well
Read CTR inside its context: compare like with like, same placement, same funnel stage, same audience temperature. Use it to pick winners between creatives, then judge the winner on what happens after the click: conversion, cost per result, and ultimately incremental sales. Curiosity is the start of the journey, not the destination.
