What is a CSS?
A Comparison Shopping Service is a price comparison website authorised to run Shopping ads on Google on behalf of merchants. Since the 2017 European Commission ruling, Google Shopping itself competes as one CSS among many, and any merchant in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK can advertise through Google's own CSS or a third party one.
Why it matters
When you bid through Google Shopping as your CSS, Google keeps a margin of the click price. When you bid through a third party CSS, that margin is not applied, which in practice means the same bid buys more auctions, or the same position costs less. The difference is often quoted around 20 percent and shows up as lower CPCs at equal ad rank.
What to check before switching
- Feed and campaign stay yours: a good CSS partner links to your Merchant Center rather than rebuilding it.
- Fees against the saving: monthly fixed fees or a share of spend, compared with the CPC gain on your volume.
- Attribution unchanged: clicks still land on your site with the same tracking and the same GCLID.
- The CSS name on the ad: "By [partner]" appears under the listing, which some brands prefer to review first.
The honest view
A CSS is a pricing mechanism, not a strategy. It lowers the cost of the auctions you already win; it does not fix a weak feed or a poorly structured account. Used on top of clean data and a sound campaign structure, it is one of the easiest efficiency gains left in Shopping. Used to compensate for the rest, it just makes a bad setup cheaper.
