Brand Safety

What is brand safety?

Brand safety is the discipline of controlling where a brand's ads appear, keeping them away from content that would damage the brand by association: misinformation, hate, violence, or simply contexts that clash with what the brand stands for.

Why it matters

Programmatic buying places ads across millions of pages, apps and videos no human will ever review. Without guardrails, the algorithm optimises for cheap reach, and cheap reach lives in ugly neighbourhoods. One screenshot of an ad next to toxic content travels further than a month of good campaigns.

The toolkit

  • Exclusion and inclusion lists: blocking known bad inventory, or whitelisting known good inventory.
  • Category and keyword controls: avoiding content themes that clash with the brand.
  • Verification partners: independent measurement of where ads actually ran.
  • Platform settings: every major platform has suitability controls; most accounts never touch them.

The balance

Overdone, brand safety becomes brand invisibility: block every risky keyword and you disappear from news, culture and everything people actually watch. The craft is calibrating suitability to the brand's real risk tolerance instead of applying maximum paranoia by default, and reviewing placements regularly instead of trusting the setup once.

OTHERS Words.

Digital rules are changing. AI shortens the gap between brand discovery and purchase. Creative content, media, and data must work together.

A/B Testing

Comparing two versions of an ad, page or email to learn which one actually performs better.

Agentic Advertising

The use of autonomous AI agents to handle repetitive advertising tasks so specialists can focus on strategy and creative.

Attribution

The method of deciding which touchpoints get credit for a conversion.
