Brand Lift

What is brand lift?

Brand lift is the change a campaign creates in how people know, consider and prefer a brand. It is usually measured with exposed versus control surveys during upper funnel campaigns: one group sees the ads, a comparable group does not, and the difference in their answers is the lift.

What it measures

  • Awareness: do more people know the brand exists?
  • Ad recall: do they remember seeing the campaign?
  • Consideration: would they shortlist the brand for their next purchase?
  • Preference and intent: would they choose it over the alternatives?

Why it matters

Clicks undervalue awareness media. Judged on conversions alone, a strong video campaign looks like a cost centre, and the budget drifts to the bottom of the funnel where credit is easy to claim. Brand lift gives the upper funnel its own evidence, so attention gets judged on what it is built for.

The discipline

Lift numbers are only useful when they connect to the rest of the system: attention only counts when it eventually turns into acquisition, and that link should be measured, not assumed. Pair brand lift studies with Media Mix Modelling so the awareness investment shows up where it finally matters, in sales.
